August Social Media Recap

Summer may be winding down, but social media isn't slowing down on the updates!

Check out all of the recent developments in the social media world from the month of August.

Twitter Turns into X

Elon Musk's newest change to the beloved Twitter app might be the biggest one yet since he took over.

He announced the rebrand of Twitter to "X". The site name was officially changed on July 22nd, and any trace of the previous bird logo has been scrubbed from the site.

This change is supposed to be the first step in Musk's plan to convert the app into a multipurpose site.

As he explained, "The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything... we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world."

As the main purpose of the website begins to pivot, marketers are left wondering if they should still be posting on the site formerly known as Twitter.

Other apps have stepped forward to try to take in the conflicted Twitter users, which brings us to our next topics!

TikTok Introduces Text Posts

TikTok's newest feature will allow users to share their thoughts through text. Sounds familiar?

TikTok added some of their flair to these text posts, by allowing users to add sounds, turn on duets, and change the background colours, so the text posts will still be as dynamic as the videos that we know and love from the app.

While there hasn't been much buzz about the text posts on the app, it's interesting to see that TikTok has also thrown their hat into the race for the Twitter replacement. Will TikTok's overall popularity help them become the official alternative?

Threads Engagement Declines

Instagram's Twitter alternative, Threads, immediately popped off, as it became the fastest growing app in history.

Unfortunately, all the initial hype hasn't kept up. It was reported that the activity and engagement on the app had dropped 70% after it's launch, but Instagram is not giving up.

In order to get users interested again, Instagram is coming up with new updates to Threads almost daily. With features like introducing a following feed, launching the desktop app, and adding an option to send Thread posts in your Instagram DMs, the app is becoming more user friendly.

Are you still on the Threads train?
