June Social Media Recap

Instagram Breaks Down Their Algorithms

Instagram helped shared deeper insight into the ranking algorithms that make the app what it is (and yes, algorithms is plural).

Adam Mosseri, chief of Instagram, published a new article that shared tons of details on how Instagram uses ranking to help curate what you see on the app to match your specific interests.

The biggest finding was that there are multiple algorithms based on which element of the app you are utilizing. Feeds, Stories, Explore, Reels, and Search are some of the features that have their own unique algorithm to help determine what you are seeing.

You can check out the full ranking details here, but here are some breakdowns of what factors influence the different algorithms:

Reels

  • Your activity (i.e., the reels you have engaged with recently)

  • Your history with the person who posted

  • Information about the reel (i.e., if they used a trending audio)

  • Information about the person who posted (such as their follower count)

Stories

  • Viewing history (if you watch the user's stories often, they will be prioritized in your feed so you won't miss them)

  • Engagement history (how often you interact with that account in other areas on Instagram, such as direct messaging)

  • Closeness (your relationship with the account, and how likely you are connected as close friends or family)

TikTok Paywall

TikTok creators are receiving an opportunity to make more money from creating content on the app.

The new feature, "Series", allows creators to put up to 80 videos behind a paywall. These videos can be up to 20 minutes long!

Creators can choose how much they want to charge for their Series, ranging from $1 to $190. Right now, this program is available to accounts in certain regions that have over 10k followers, and the user must be 18+. There are other views and posting requirements that you must fall under, which you can read on the TikTok website.

After many complaints from creators about the lack of profit that they were making from other monetization features on the app, TikTok created this program to allow their top creators to earn a living.

With Series allowing creators to set their own earnings, TikTok is definitely trying to ensure that their creators stay on the app instead of moving their content somewhere else.

TikTok Creative Challenge

Whether you are a brand or an influencer looking for a partnership, this TikTok feature is for you!

The Creative Challenge is a program that allows users to create UGC-style videos for top brands. Brands can post a brief, and creators can respond with a video that meets the brief's guidelines. These videos will live in the Creative Challenge section of the app rather than their own feed.

It's a win/win, as brands are getting high quality UGC content, and creators are getting paid a substantial amount for the work that they've done. (A source in the program says that earnings have ranged from $22,000 to $34,000 per month, with bonuses ranging from $200 to $6,000).

This program sounds awesome, but it's currently in beta testing still. Users and brands are only allowed to participate in the program by invitation. Stay tuned to our blog because we'll let you know when the program is open to the public.
